SpaceX — the company that made rockets land

Every era of spaceflight has one organization that resets what 'normal' means. This era's is a company that was three failures deep and weeks from dead in 2008 — and now lands rockets so routinely that the landings stopped making the news, which is the most radical thing about them.

Flight four or die

By September 2008, SpaceX had flown its small Falcon 1 rocket three times and destroyed it three times. The money was nearly gone; one more failure would have closed the doors. Flight four, cobbled together in six weeks, reached orbit — the first privately developed liquid-fueled rocket ever to do so. Elon Musk has said the company was down to funds for that single attempt. NASA's first cargo contract arrived months later. The entire commercial launch industry that exists today sits on that one afternoon on Kwajalein Atoll.

The trick nobody thought was worth it

The industry consensus for fifty years was that reusing orbital boosters wasn't worth the performance penalty. On December 21, 2015, a Falcon 9 first stage flew back from staging and set down vertically at Cape Canaveral — and the argument was over, though it took competitors years to admit it. Boosters in the fleet now fly twenty-plus missions each. The economics did exactly what the skeptics said they wouldn't.

What reuse actually bought wasn't just cheaper launch — it was cadence. SpaceX now launches more mass to orbit per year than the rest of the planet combined, most of it its own Starlink constellation, which in turn funds the next act.

The car and the cross-country ballet

The 2018 Falcon Heavy demo carried a test payload chosen with maximum cheek — the founder's own roadster, now in a long orbit past Mars — but the image that mattered came minutes later: two side boosters landing simultaneously, side by side, like the future clearing its throat. Crew Dragon followed, ending America's nine-year gap in human launch in 2020 and making SpaceX the first company to put people in orbit.

The machine that eats its predecessors

Starship is the bet that makes the previous bets look conservative: a fully reusable, stainless-steel system nearly forty stories tall, more thrust than any machine ever flown, intended to make launch a commodity and Mars a destination. The development program is run in public — flights that end in fireballs are called data, and sometimes they are. In October 2024 the program produced its signature image: the Super Heavy booster flying back to the pad and being caught out of the air by the launch tower's arms.

Whether Starship delivers its full promise is one of the genuinely open questions in this atlas. What's already settled: NASA chose it to land the next astronauts on the Moon.
