Axiom — the company renting rooms in orbit

The ISS will not fly forever, and Axiom's founders — who include the man who ran the station program for NASA for a decade — built a company on that sentence. The plan: fly private crews now, bolt commercial modules onto the ISS next, and detach them as a free-flying station when the old ship retires. Succession planning, at orbital velocity.

The private missions

In April 2022, Ax-1 docked a crew of four private astronauts to the ISS — the first all-private mission to the station in its history, commanded by a former NASA astronaut. The follow-ups turned a novelty into a program: Ax-2 and Ax-3 flew a mix of national astronauts whose countries lack their own crew programs, and Ax-4 in 2025 carried the first astronauts from India, Poland, and Hungary to reach the station — nations buying orbital experience the way they once bought Soyuz seats from Russia.

That's the actual product: not tourism, but access — a second door into human spaceflight that doesn't require building a national program first.

The next bootprints wear a logo

When NASA astronauts next walk on the Moon, they'll do it in suits built by a company, not an agency: Axiom won the contract to develop the AxEMU — the Artemis moonwalk suit — with mobility its Apollo ancestors never had, sized for a far wider range of bodies, and rated for the brutal cold of the lunar south pole. The design was unveiled with a black cover layer styled by a costume house; the flight version is white for the oldest reason in the book — thermal control.

The succession plan

The endgame is the station itself. Axiom's modules — under construction in Houston, with the first hardware slated to launch late this decade — are designed to attach to the ISS, draw power and life support from it while the fleet grows, and then detach as Axiom Station before the ISS is deorbited around 2030. If it works, there will be no gap: the address changes, low Earth orbit stays inhabited, and the customer list shifts from fifteen governments to anyone who can pay. It's the least glamorous mission in this section and possibly the most consequential — someone has to own the real estate after the government moves out.
