Blue Origin — gradatim ferociter

The motto is Latin — "step by step, ferociously" — and the mascot is a tortoise. Blue Origin is older than SpaceX, spent its first two decades being teased for flying slower, and then put a heavy-lift rocket into orbit and landed its booster on a ship on the second try. Tortoises get there.

The long game, stated plainly

Jeff Bezos founded Blue Origin in 2000 with a goal he repeats without blinking: millions of people living and working in space, with heavy industry moved off-planet and Earth rezoned residential. The company spent its first twenty years mostly quiet and mostly self-funded — reportedly a billion dollars a year of Amazon stock — building engines, test stands, and an institutional distaste for hurry. The scoreboard mentality of the launch industry never seemed to interest it. The infrastructure did.

The suborbital proving ground

New Shepard — named for Alan Shepard, whose 1961 flight it roughly retraces — became in November 2015 the first rocket to cross the space boundary and land vertically. Since 2021 it has flown paying passengers on eleven-minute arcs past the Kármán line: three minutes of weightlessness, the curve of the Earth, and a parachute landing in the West Texas scrub. Passengers have included Wally Funk, one of the women who qualified for spaceflight in the 1960s and was never flown, and William Shatner, who returned visibly shaken by the beauty of it.

Easy to dismiss as tourism; more accurate to read as flight heritage — engines, autonomy, and crew systems rehearsed at low stakes.

New Glenn arrives

New Glenn — named for the first American to orbit — is the thesis stated at full scale: a rocket taller than a football field is long, with a seven-meter fairing twice the volume of anything else flying and a first stage designed from day one for reuse. It reached orbit on its first flight in January 2025, and on its second flight later that year landed its booster downrange on the ship Jacklyn — a feat that took its neighbor years of public crashes to master, done here on attempt two.

The engines matter beyond Blue itself: the BE-4s on New Glenn's first stage also power ULA's Vulcan. Two of America's heavy rockets fly on Kent, Washington machinery.

The Moon contract and the road ahead

The next decade is already booked: Blue Moon landers under NASA contract — the uncrewed MK1 and the crewed MK2 for Artemis V — plus Orbital Reef, a commercial station concept with Sierra Space, and a launch manifest that includes NASA's ESCAPADE probes, already sent on their way to Mars aboard New Glenn. The company that was a punchline for slowness now holds pieces of the lunar program, the station-replacement program, and the heavy-lift market simultaneously. Step by step. Ferociously.
