Rocket Lab — orbit from a sheep paddock

Peter Beck never got an engineering degree — he apprenticed as a toolmaker and built rocket bikes in a shed. His company put New Zealand on the list of spacefaring nations, flies the only small rocket that matters, and did it all with a machine whose engines are electric-pumped, 3D-printed, and named after his heroes.

The paddock at the end of the world

Launch Complex 1 sits on the Māhia Peninsula on New Zealand's east coast — sheep country, ocean on three sides, and airspace so empty that it is licensed for a launch cadence no American range can match. When Electron first flew from it in 2017, it was the first private orbital launch site in history, and New Zealand became a launching state with a space agency created essentially to regulate one company.

Electron itself is a study in doing small launch differently: a carbon-composite airframe, engines whose propellant pumps are driven by batteries and electric motors instead of turbomachinery, and the whole vehicle printed and wound rather than machined and riveted.

Helicopters, then boats

Rocket Lab's reuse program had the best television in the business: catch a returning booster's parachute line out of the sky with a helicopter. It worked — briefly — in 2022, before the company concluded the stunt was harder than the problem required and switched to fishing boosters from the sea, marinized electronics and all. The pattern is very Beck: try the audacious version, keep the data, ship the practical version. The same pragmatism sent CAPSTONE — a microwave-oven-sized NASA probe — to lunar orbit in 2022 on an Electron and a high-energy kick stage, the smallest rocket ever to send anything to the Moon.

Quietly becoming a space company, not a launch company

The part of Rocket Lab most people miss: more of its business is building spacecraft than launching them. Its Photon and Explorer platforms, solar arrays, reaction wheels, separation systems and software fly on other people's missions across the industry — including the twin ESCAPADE Mars probes it built for NASA, launched toward the red planet on Blue Origin's New Glenn. Beck's company sells shovels in the gold rush and picks its own claims.

Neutron — the medium-lift, reusable successor — is the play for the bigger market, aimed squarely at the constellation-launch business the small rocket can't address.
